Employment Visa Renewal in Dubai – Quick, Affordable Help

Renewing an employment visa in Dubai for mainland companies involves several key steps. Here’s a detailed overview of the process, handled end to end by PRO Deskk.

Before you renew

Pre-requisites for an Employment Visa Renewal.

A renewal looks routine until one of these six is out of order. Each is checked before we file — because a renewal that stalls past the expiry date costs fines as well as time.

Prerequisite 01

Ministry of Human Resources & Emiratisation

A renewal is filed against the company, not just the employee. If the establishment record is not clear at MOHRE, the labour card renewal will not go through — whatever state the employee’s documents are in.

What must be in place
  • Trade licence valid at the time of filing, and not inside a lapsed grace period
  • Establishment card current, with the immigration file open
  • No outstanding MOHRE fines or suspension against the establishment
  • E-signature card valid for the sponsor or owner
  • Company category confirmed — this sets whether you pay the Category 2 or Category 3 labour fee
  • WPS compliance — salaries paid through the Wage Protection System without flagged months
  • Emiratisation targets met, where the company falls inside the mandated headcount bands
Where files stall: A WPS flag or an unpaid fine will block the renewal silently — the file simply does not progress. We check the establishment record first and tell you what needs clearing.
Prerequisite 02

Designation & contract terms

A renewal is the point where the file is re-examined. If the designation, contract or qualifications have drifted out of alignment since the original visa, this is when it surfaces.

Checked before filing
  • Designation unchanged — a different job title needs a designation modification, not a renewal
  • Contract still valid, or renewed, with the term stated
  • Qualifications on file still support the designation and skill band
  • Tawjeeh completed where the profession requires it
  • Regulated roles — medical, legal, engineering and teaching approvals still current
  • Labour card details match the residence visa and the Emirates ID exactly
Where files stall: If the employee has effectively changed role, a designation modification must be filed before or alongside the renewal. Renewing on the old title creates a mismatch that resurfaces at the next filing.
Prerequisite 03

Change in salary

Salary is not a formality on renewal. It is recorded on the labour contract, paid through WPS, and it determines whether the employee can still sponsor their family.

Where salary matters
  • New salary reflected in the labour contract and the MOHRE record, not just internally
  • WPS record consistent with the contracted figure over the preceding months
  • Basic vs allowances split correctly — end-of-service accrues on basic salary
  • Family sponsorship threshold still met if the employee sponsors dependants
  • Salary reduction requires the employee’s documented agreement before it is filed
  • Contract amendment filed where terms have materially changed
Where files stall: A salary shown on WPS that does not match the contract is a compliance issue, not a clerical one. We reconcile the two before the renewal is submitted.
Prerequisite 04

Medical & Emirates ID

Two items expire on their own schedule, independent of the visa. Both must be current before the residency renewal can be stamped.

What gets checked
  • Medical fitness test — a new test is required where the previous one has expired
  • Blood test and chest X-ray at an authorised health centre
  • Emirates ID renewal filed through ICA, with biometrics updated if required
  • Expiry alignment — Emirates ID and visa dates checked against each other
  • VIP medical at 750 AED available where the normal 300 AED route is too slow
  • Health insurance in place, as required for residency in Dubai
Where files stall: Emirates ID and visa expiry dates do not always align. We check both, because renewing one and missing the other still leaves the employee out of status.
Prerequisite 05

Timing & grace period

Renewal timing decides whether you pay the fee or the fee plus fines — and whether the employee loses days from the new visa term.

The dates that matter
  • Start 1–2 months early — the safe window before expiry
  • Renewed before expiry: the new visa runs from the date of submission
  • Renewed after expiry: the new visa runs from the last expiry date, so you lose the gap
  • Visa grace period — 30 days from the date of expiry
  • Labour card grace period — 60 days from the date of expiry
  • Emirates ID grace period — 30 days from the date of expiry
Where files stall: Renewing after expiry costs you twice: fines accrue daily, and the new term is backdated to the old expiry date rather than starting fresh.
Prerequisite 06

Budget & company category

Two variables move the renewal cost more than anything else: your MOHRE company category and whether a new medical is required.

What to plan for
  • Category 2 labour fee at 1,284.77 AED
  • Category 3 labour fee at 3,550.77 AED — nearly three times higher
  • Medical 300 AED normal, or 750 AED VIP where the timeline is tight
  • Emirates ID renewal at 376.20 AED
  • Visa renewal 443.50 AED through GDRFA, or 553.50 AED through AMER
  • Labour insurance at 189.00 AED or 144.38 AED, depending on the file
Where files stall: Company category is set by MOHRE and can change between filings. We confirm your current classification before quoting, so the figure you receive is the figure you pay.

How it works

Process

01

Document check

Ensure all employee documents are up-to-date and comply with UAE regulations before anything is filed — passport validity, existing visa, Emirates ID, contract and labour card.

02

Labour Card / Work Permit renewal

The employer renews the Labour Card, or Work Permit, through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). This involves submitting the employee’s current employment details and supporting documents, and paying the required fees.

03

Medical examination

If the employee’s medical fitness test has expired or a new one is required: schedule an appointment at an authorized health center, undergo medical tests which typically include blood tests and a chest X-ray, and obtain results — a medical fitness certificate is issued if the tests are passed.

04

Emirates ID renewal

Apply for renewal: submit a renewal application for the Emirates ID through the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA). Provide biometrics: if required, update biometric information — fingerprints and photograph.

05

Residency visa renewal

The employer submits the residency visa renewal application through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) or an AMER centre. This includes the completed application form, medical fitness certificate, updated Emirates ID application receipt, and any additional required documents.

06

Final steps

Collect documents: once the visa is renewed, collect the renewed residency visa and Emirates ID. Update records: ensure that all relevant records, including the company’s HR system, are updated with the new visa and Emirates ID information.

Benefits

Additional notes.

Three things worth planning for before you begin an employment visa renewal in Dubai.

Timing

Fees

Be aware of the various fees associated with visa renewal, including those for medical tests, Emirates ID, and visa stamping — all listed below at cost.

Compliance

Ensure compliance with any additional requirements set by the MOHRE or GDRFA. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, consult the official MOHRE, GDRFA and ICA websites, or seek advice from a PRO or immigration specialist.

FAQs

Employment Visa Renewal Services in Dubai, answered.

When should I start the renewal process?

Start at least 1 to 2 months before the current visa or Emirates ID expires, to avoid any lapse in legal status. We file ahead of expiry so a renewal never turns into a fine.

Does the employee need a new medical test?

Only if the existing medical fitness test has expired or a new one is required for the renewal. Where it is needed, we book the appointment and schedule it alongside Emirates ID biometrics.

Who submits the renewal application?

The employer submits the residency visa renewal through GDRFA or an AMER centre, and renews the Labour Card through MOHRE. We handle both filings on your behalf as your appointed PRO.

What happens if the visa expires before renewal?

The employee falls out of status and daily fines begin to accrue. If renewed before the expiry date the new visa starts from submission; if renewed after expiry it starts from the last expiry date, so you lose the days in between.

How long does an employment visa renewal take?

With documents in order and appointments available, a renewal typically completes within a week. Starting one to two months ahead gives room for a medical, biometrics or an unexpected query without risking a lapse.

Do you handle free zone visa renewals as well as mainland?

Yes. We renew employment visas across Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi mainland, and across the free zones including IFZA, Meydan, DMCC, DSO, DIFC, DAFZA, JAFZA, TECOM, SHAMS, SRTIP, ADGM and RAKEZ.
