Getting started

Initiating the Renewal Process

  • It’s advisable to start the renewal process at least 60 days before the current visa expires. This allows sufficient time for any potential issues and avoids overstaying penalties.
  • Ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria for renewal, which generally include having a valid employment contract and being in compliance with UAE labor laws.

Additional terms

Two rules worth knowing.

Age above 65 years

The Labour Card can be renewed till age 65. Beyond that, normal fees plus AED 5,000 extra are required for renewal.

Validity of visa

If renewed before the expiry date, the new visa starts from submission. If renewed after expiry, the new visa starts from the last expiry date — so you lose the days in between.

Before you renew

Pre-requisites for an Employment Visa Renewal in Sharjah.

A renewal looks routine until one of these six is out of order. Each is checked before we file — because a renewal that stalls past the expiry date costs fines as well as time.

Prerequisite 01

Ministry of Human Resources & Emiratisation

A renewal is filed against the company, not just the employee. If the establishment record is not clear at MOHRE, the work permit renewal will not go through.

What must be in place
  • Trade licence valid at the time of filing
  • Establishment card current, with the immigration file open
  • Company MOL number active, with no suspension on the account
  • Sponsor / owner e-signature card and EID valid
  • No outstanding MOHRE fines against the establishment
  • Company category confirmed — this sets the submission fee at 1,284.77 or 3,550.77
  • WPS compliance — salaries paid without flagged months
Where files stall: A WPS flag or an unpaid fine will block the renewal silently — the file simply does not progress. We check the establishment record first.
Prerequisite 02

Designation & contract

A renewal is where the file is re-examined. If the designation or contract has drifted since the original visa, this is when it surfaces.

Checked before filing
  • Designation unchanged — a different job title needs a modification, not a renewal
  • Valid employment contract in place, as required for renewal eligibility
  • Signed contract copy available for the submission
  • Employee labour card current and matching the visa
  • Qualifications on file still support the designation
  • Compliance with UAE labor laws confirmed across the file
Where files stall: If the employee has effectively changed role, a designation modification must be filed before or alongside the renewal. Renewing on the old title creates a mismatch.
Prerequisite 03

Change in salary

Salary details are submitted with the work permit renewal. Any change since the last filing must be reflected consistently.

Where salary matters
  • Salary details submitted with the work permit renewal at Tas’heel
  • New salary reflected in the labour contract and the MOHRE record
  • WPS record consistent with the contracted figure
  • Basic vs allowances split correctly — end-of-service accrues on basic
  • Family sponsorship threshold still met if the employee sponsors dependants
  • Salary reduction requires the employee’s documented agreement
Where files stall: A salary shown on WPS that does not match the contract is a compliance issue, not a clerical one. We reconcile the two before submission.
Prerequisite 04

Timing & validity

Renewal timing decides whether you pay the fee or the fee plus fines — and whether the employee loses days from the new visa term.

The dates that matter
  • Start at least 60 days before the current visa expires
  • Renewed before expiry: the new visa runs from the date of submission
  • Renewed after expiry: the new visa runs from the last expiry date
  • Overstaying penalties avoided by starting inside the window
  • Emirates ID expiry checked separately — the dates often differ
  • Labour card expiry checked alongside the residence visa
Where files stall: Renewing after expiry costs you twice: fines accrue daily, and the new term is backdated to the old expiry date rather than starting fresh.
Prerequisite 05

Medical & Emirates ID

Two items expire on their own schedule. Both must be current before the residency renewal can be stamped.

What gets checked
  • Medical typing and test at an authorised Medical Centre
  • Medical fit certificate required for the stamping application
  • Emirates ID renewal typing with old EID copy and photograph
  • VIP medical at 750.00 AED where the normal 300.00 AED route is too slow
  • White background photo for both applications
  • Health insurance in place, as required for residency
Where files stall: Emirates ID and visa expiry dates do not always align. Renewing one and missing the other still leaves the employee out of status.
Prerequisite 06

Age limit & costs

Two variables move the renewal cost more than anything else: your company category and the employee’s age.

What to plan for
  • Labour Card renewable till age 65
  • Above 65: normal fees plus AED 5,000 extra are required
  • Category 2 submission at 1,284.77 AED
  • Category 3 submission at 3,550.77 AED — nearly three times higher
  • Medical 300.00 AED normal, or 750.00 AED VIP
  • Emirates ID renewal at 376.20 AED, plus 762.00 AED for typing and stamping
Where files stall: The AED 5,000 surcharge above age 65 catches employers by surprise at budget time. We flag any employee approaching the threshold at the start of the year.
