Pre-requisites for a Family Visa Cancellation.

A cancellation is simple to file and easy to get wrong. These six are confirmed before anything is submitted — because an overstay fine costs more than the cancellation itself.

Prerequisite 01

Reason for cancellation

Why the visa is being cancelled determines the route, the timing and what happens to the dependant afterwards. It is confirmed before anything is filed.

  • Sponsor leaving the UAE and no longer needing to sponsor dependents
  • Dependents leaving the UAE permanently
  • Sponsor no longer meets the requirements to sponsor them
  • Sponsor’s own visa cancelled — dependants fall with it automatically
  • Change of sponsor planned, where another resident will take over
  • Timing of departure relative to the cancellation date
Where files stall: If the sponsor’s own visa is being cancelled, dependants must be cancelled first or alongside. Leaving them attached to a cancelled sponsor creates overstay from day one.
Prerequisite 02

Sponsor obligations

The sponsor remains responsible for the dependant until the cancellation is confirmed. Anything outstanding against the sponsor blocks the file.

Cleared before filing
  • Sponsor’s residence visa and Emirates ID available in original
  • No outstanding fines against the sponsor’s immigration file
  • Cancellation application form completed, where applicable
  • All dependants accounted for — each one cancelled individually
  • Sponsor available to sign, or a POA in place if abroad
  • Records retained for any future sponsorship application
Where files stall: A sponsor who has already left the country without arranging a POA turns a routine cancellation into a long-distance problem. Arrange it before departure.
Prerequisite 03

Documents in original

Family visa cancellations need originals, not copies. Files stall most often because a dependant has already travelled with their passport.

Required physically
  • Original passports of the sponsor and every dependant
  • Residence visas and copies for each dependant
  • Emirates IDs in original, returned by each dependant
  • Sponsor’s Emirates ID in original
  • Copies of everything retained for your own records
  • Supporting documents as requested by GDRFA
Where files stall: Collect passports and Emirates IDs before anyone books a flight. Cancellations stall most often because the documents have already left the country.
Prerequisite 04

Exit permits & departure

Cancellation and departure need to be sequenced together. Getting the order wrong is what creates overstay fines.

  • Valid exit permit where the dependents are leaving the UAE
  • Departure procedures completed at the airport
  • Grace period understood — 30 days from the date of cancellation
  • Travel dates aligned with the cancellation timeline
  • Overstay avoided by handling cancellation and departure promptly
  • Re-entry plans considered, if the family intends to return
Where files stall: Cancellation starts a clock. If travel is booked for after the grace period expires, fines accrue regardless of the cancellation having been filed correctly.
Prerequisite 05

Transfer to a new sponsor

Not every cancellation ends in departure. Where a dependant is moving to another sponsor, the timing has to work in both directions.

Where applicable
  • New sponsor identified and their eligibility confirmed
  • New sponsor’s salary meets the threshold for the dependants
  • Transfer within the grace period, so there is no gap in status
  • New accommodation proof in the incoming sponsor’s name
  • Attested certificates still valid for the new application
  • Health insurance arranged under the new sponsor
Where files stall: A transfer must complete inside the grace period. Cancelling first and finding a new sponsor afterwards leaves the dependant out of status in between.
Prerequisite 06

Costs & deposits

Cancellation is the cheapest stage of a family visa, and for some sponsors it is where a deposit comes back.

  • Visa cancellation at 230.00 AED per dependant
  • Deposit refund where an investor or partner sponsor paid Dh3,020 per member
  • Refund to the sponsor’s account only — IBAN must be correct on file
  • Overstay fines avoided by completing promptly
  • No outstanding fines against the file before cancellation is accepted
  • Receipts retained for the refund and for future reference
Where files stall: Where a deposit was paid at the original application, cancellation is what releases it — but only to the sponsor’s account, and only once the file is fully closed.
